Forestry Smoke Screening Tool
Welcome to the Florida Forest Service's Internet Smoke
Screening Tool (SST). The Florida Forest Service is the first in the nation to offer an
internet-based Smoke Screening Tool that uses the latest computer
technology and forecasted weather data to view the potential impacts
from a smoke plume. Anyone can use the tool, but it is primarily
designed to allow individuals who are planning on conducting acreage or
pile burning to view a predicted smoke plume for the planned burn.
As long as all burn
parameters are the same, you will see the same plume with the Smoke
Screening Tool that the Florida Forest Service Duty Officer sees in the
district office when they issue or deny an official authorization. To
obtain a burn authorization, you will need to call the Florida Forest Service District Office in your area.
Remember, the Smoke Screening
Tool does not authorize a burn.
Note: Certified Burners may use the Internet Smoke Screening Tool for the
required smoke screening plan in their written burn prescription. A
screen print should be taken of the smoke plume and attached to the
written burn prescription.
